Windows 11 FAQs: What you need to know about upgrading.
Aug 28, 2025
We know that upgrading to Windows 11 can feel like a big step and that you have lots of questions about what this might mean for your organisation, especially your hardware.
Working closely with our clients, we’ve heard lots of questions and concerns, so we’ve answered them in one place for you to help you make the transition.
Here is all you need to know about upgrading.
Does my current PC support Windows 11?
It depends on your hardware. Windows 11 has stricter requirements than Windows 10, especially around security and performance.
To run Windows 11, your PC needs:
- A compatible processor (Intel 8th Gen or AMD Ryzen 2000 series and newer)
- TPM 2.0 (a built-in security chip)
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot enabled
- At least 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage
How to check: You can run Microsoft’s PC Health Check Tool or ask your IT provider to assess your fleet.
What happens if I don’t upgrade?
If you don’t upgrade to Windows 11 on the 14th of October 2025, Windows 10 will go end of life meaning it will no longer be supported by Microsoft. While your business won’t stop functioning, there are some important risks to consider:
- Security risks: Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates after 14 October 2025, which means your systems will become vulnerable to new threats.
- Software limitations: As more developers optimise apps for Windows 11, older devices may struggle to run newer tools smoothly.
- Compliance issues: Unsupported systems may fall short of regulatory or industry standards for data protection.
What you can do: we recommend you upgrade to Windows 11. If you’ve found your current devices are unable to support this and a hardware upgrade seems like a large investment, we have the opportunity to spread the cost over a 3 year period to ensure a more manageable operational expenditure.
How long do I have?
Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025.
That might feel far away, but in IT terms, it’s closer than you think especially if you need to plan hardware budgets, assess compatibility and roll out new systems across your team.
Our advice? Start planning now to avoid rushed decisions down the line.
Will I lose data if I upgrade?
No. If done correctly, you shouldn’t lose any data.
Upgrading to Windows 11, or replacing an old device, doesn’t mean starting from scratch. That said, it’s essential to:
- Back up your files and settings before upgrading
- Work with a trusted IT provider to migrate your data safely
- Double-check that all essential apps and tools will run smoothly on the new system
